About ME!
I have always had a love for animals... from a young age I would attract anything that crawled.
I brought home turtles, insects, if I could catch it It easily became my pet.As soon as I was old enough I was involved in 4-H.
I had many projects in 4-H and enjoyed the animal projects, cooking, crafts, and sewing projects the most. For animals for my projects I had: hamsters, gerbils, a parakeet, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits and goats. I always did well with all of my animals. I never got a chance to finish the goat project and show them... but I sure do love their personalities.
My rabbits I think were New Zealand whites. I would win first place at the county fair and always had the option of going to state fair with my rabbits, but we never could travel that far.
Later when I was in high school, we moved into town so I could no longer have my goats or my rabbits. So I gave up my rabbits, I never new of the outside world of ARBA rabbit shows.
At this time I was a member of the United States Pony Club and I rode horses every weekend. After Gradution from High school in 1995, I went on to the State University of New York at Morrisville. This is a agricultural college where I majored in Animal Scince ~ Equine Science and Management. (In other words, I majored in horses). I graduated from SUNY-Morrisville in May of 1997, with an AAS degree. I was also inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Fraturnity, which is a honors society.
While at Morrisville, I met a wonderful person who introduced me to the world of rabbit showing. Her name is Emily Meagher from Govourneur NY. She raises Holland Lops.
I was able to get a Holland Lop rabbit from Emily, which I took to several shows and by doing this I learned about showing rabbits in ARBA movies. My rabbit never did wonderful at the shows as she turned out to me more of a brood quality doe. I did have fun learning about showing.I found out that Holland Lops are not the breed for me so it took me a couple of years of looking at the shows and trying to determine what breed was right for me.
In June of 1997, I gave birth to a wonderful baby girl which I named Michaella Anne Gallo.
I am currently enrolled at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh and seeking a BS degree in Cellular Biochemistry.
I decided that I liked Polish rabbits, for their size, temperment, and low class size.
I liked the Netherland Dwarf rabbits, but with all of their varieties I kinda got intimidated by the largeness of that breed.Polish rabbits at the time I started looking at them only had 5 varieties. They now have 6 as the broken variety gained its acceptance in 1998.
So last year (2000), I started looking for Polish stock in my area. I was dismayed to find my favorite variety the Ruby-eyed white vertually non-existant in my state. Mature Women Joined the ARBA and the NPRC which gave me a lot of information about showing rabbits and my breed.
I found only 2 Rew does, one from Mass. and one from PA, But that left me with out a Rew buck. I obtained a pair of Polish from Denis Naked (canada) and a black doe from Sandy Apearle (NY). These were the Foundation beginning to my Polish herd.
I had my first litters born in December 2000, and I have only kept 2 rabbits from that litter.
I have since bred many more litters. I have won BOV with a blue buck that I bred and was born back in December 2000. I am focusing my energy on Ruby-eyed whites, chocolates, and brokens. I do have some blacks and some blues. I want to promote the polish breed all that I can, but I would love to see a great increase in the exibitors of the Ruby-eyed whites. This year I purchased a trio of Rews from Grant Olson (GA) and already have a wonderful litter of Rews coming from his stock.
I hope to eventually win more BOV and BOSV... with the hope and aspiration to maybe win BOSB and BOB...
I hope to see everyone at the shows when I can get there, and please email me if you wish to have any stock... I have very reasonable prices and excellent stock!
